Back Up Your ECA Certificate Using Netscape

VeriSign recommends that you back up your ECA certificates and keys in case you need to move them to a new computer or restore them if they become corrupted. You can export them to a floppy disk or CD by following the instructions below. You should store the floppy disk or CD in a secure place such as a safe or lockable cabinet.

Netscape 7.1 or 7.2

Back up Instructions:

  1. Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Certificates -> Manage Certificates
  2. Highlight your certificate and click 'Backup'. Follow the instructions on screen. This will produce a file with extension "p12".

Restore Instructions:

  1. Copy the backed-up file to the computer where you want to use it and start the browser.
  2. Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Certificates -> Manage Certificates
  3. Click Import and point it to the recently copied .p12 file. Follow the instructions on screen.

Back up Instructions:

  1. Go to Security by clicking on the lock icon. Or, click Communicator on the toolbar, then click Tools, and then click Security Info.
  2. Under Certificates, click Yours.
  3. Select the certificate to export.
  4. Click Export.
  5. Enter the Netscape browser certificate store password.
  6. Enter the password to protect the certificate and private key being exported. Enter this password again to confirm.
  7. Browse to the directory where you wish to store the file and select a file name. Click OK.
  8. You should see the message "Your certificate has been successfully exported."
