Back Up Your ECA Certificate Using Internet Explorer

VeriSign recommends that you back up your ECA certificates and keys in case you need to move them to a new computer or restore them if they become corrupted. You can export them to a floppy disk or CD by following the instructions below. You should store the floppy disk or CD in a secure place such as a safe or lockable cabinet.

  1. Select the Tools drop-down menu and click on Internet Options.
  2. Select the Content tab and click on the Certificates button.
  3. Under the Personal tab, select the digital certificate that you would like to export.
  4. Click Export. The Certificate Manager Export Wizard will open.
  5. Click Next to initiate the export process.
  6. Select Yes, Export the private key, and then select Next.
  7. Ensure the following checkbox is selected:
    a. Include all certificates in the certification path if possible.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Enter and confirm a password to encrypt the private key you are exporting. Click Next.
  10. Under Export File Name, click Browse and choose where you would like to save your digital certificate (most likely a floppy drive or portable storage device).
  11. Enter a filename for the certificate.
  12. Click OK, then Next.
  13. Click Finish and the export process is complete.
